ps. I know companies that advertise during television broadcasting pay the channels/shows money but im pretty sure thats not where the stations/shows get ALL their money from.

Answer:

It is the ads. No other place.

Here's how it works...the sales department of a network promises a client a certain percentage of viewers that will be tuning in (all based on research) and all based on demographics (male, female, certain age groups 18-34, 18-49, etc.). If a show can fulfill that rating for the target audience the advertiser is looking for based on those demographics and can CONTINUE to get those ratings or higher, they can up the price on the block of time the advertiser wants to buy. On the opposite, if the ratings aren't up to advertisers expectations, the networks have to deliver "make goods" (running ads for free). There are also ads that are known as "direct responses" (usually for products that you have to call in and order). Money is made based on the amount of sales that have been generated from that ad and a percentage of the sales goes to the television network/station. Television stations run those ads for "free" in exchange for those percentages.

For the most part, ad rates are determined during "sweeps" (September, November, February and May) where in September and February (early January), new shows premiere...November..to determine which new shows have legs and May, during season/series finales. Which is why during those months you see new episodes and more racier material during shows.

In the case of an HBO, a premium cable channel that airs no commercials, uncensored material...their revenue is based on the amount of subscribers paying the extra fee to see those channels. Which is why they do their best to put on shows that "conventional television" can't air. HBO garners more money during the time that original episodes of "The Sopranos" airs than others since most people unsubscribe after "The Sopranos" original run ends.
